V-BCI

Nanochap’s V-BCI directly implants a Flexible Electrode Array into the visual cortex, bypassing the retina and optic nerve pathways to directly stimulate neurons in the visual cortex and thereby enable artificial visual perception. V-BCI is designed for patients with blindness who have undergone eye removal or have severe optic nerve atrophy, optic nerve transection, or congenital absence of the optic nerve. The V-BCI product has entered animal trials, with First-in-Human (FIH) trial planned to begin in 2026.

Implant Device

Flexible Electrode Array
The flexible electrode array conforms closely to the visual cortex, increasing the surface area of the stimulation sites and enhancing contact with the surrounding tissues. This helps reduce impedance and stimulation energy consumption while enabling efficient and stable electrical stimulation of cells in the visual cortex.
Stimulation Module
Generates corresponding electrical current signals on each stimulation channel based on decoded image signal streams and configuration commands, and delivers electrical stimulation to the corresponding areas of the visual cortex through the Flexible Electrode Array.
Wireless Communication Module
Demodulates and decodes image signal streams and configuration commands, and transmits them to the neural encoding chip.
Coupling Coil
The Wearable Kit wirelessly transmits/receives signals and power to the Implant Device.
耦合线圈
体外机通过无线通讯向植入体传播信号与能量
01. Implantation Site
Implanted in the subdural space over the visual cortex, V-BCI bypasses the retinal and optic nerve pathways and is designed to address the needs of a broad range of people with blindness.
02. Surgical Safety
The implant does not penetrate the visual cortex, effectively reducing the risk of brain tissue damage and enhancing surgical safety.
03. Signal Acquisition and Transmission
The Wearable Kit captures and processes visual information and wirelessly transmits it to the Implant Device. The Implant Device then delivers electrical stimulation to the visual cortex by mimicking visual neural signals, thereby reconstructing the process of visual perception.
04. High Resolution
With 1,280 signal acquisition channels and 1,280 stimulation channels, V-BCI is designed to significantly improve visual resolution, support visual restoration for people with blindness, and help restore their ability to live independently.
